On-Line and Phone Orders Ending Dec. 1The last day to be able to order advanced tickets on line or by phone for the “Cops & Kids” concert is December 1st, 10pm. All remaining tickets will have to be purchased at the door. With only approximately 150 lower bleacher seats remaining, we expect to sell out of them. When you say nothing at all, no one hears. When you do nothing at all, no one cares. But when someone says and does something that is selfless and beautiful, everyone tends to listen and care. With a compassionate heart, J.D. Crowe and the New South with a special performance by Alison Krauss and Dan Tyminski, and local gospel band Drawing Nigh will show fans exactly what heart-felt music and love are all about this holiday season when they perform at the Powell County High School in Stanton, KY, on Saturday, Dec. 3rd beginning at 6:00 p.m. The benefit concert will help raise money for the Fraternal Order of Police (FOP) to carry on their longstanding tradition of helping under-privileged children in the poverty-stricken east central Kentucky county. All the proceeds raised from the concert will go toward meeting children’s needs, especially with funding the “FOP Cops & Kids” program. Retired Officer, Major Phillip Frazier, president of the Powell County FOP, said the collaborative effort between the FOP and the local school system has been instrumental in seeing the needs of local children met. Frazier added that Bluegrass legend J.D. Crowe & The New South Band have been performing a benefit show for the local FOP over the past few years and that with the special performance by Grammy award–winning musicians Alison Krauss and Dan Tyminski, this year’s benefit should be one of the most highly anticipated concerts of the day. Bluegrass PRIDE’s Tenth Anniversary Celebration:
A Bluegrass Concert for Bluegrass PRIDE 09.21.2011 Bluegrass PRIDE is celebrating ten years of operation, during which it has provided environmental education and sustainability programs to its 18 county service area. To mark this milestone, it is sponsoring a Bluegrass Music Concert featuring Bluegrass legend J.D. Crowe and the New South and the new North Carolina band Balsam Range. The concert is at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, September 24 at Memorial Hall on the UK campus. Tickets are just $20 and all proceeds go to support Bluegrass PRIDE’s sustainability programs in the schools and communities of its service area. Tickets can be purchased online at www.bgpride.org or at the door. Co- sponsors for the event are the John Jacob Niles Center for American Music at the University of Kentucky, Toyota Motor Manufacturing of Kentucky and Pepsi-Cola Bottling Company of Central Kentucky.
J.D. Returns to the Road! J.D. is planning to come to Gettysburg, PA this weekend to play at the Gettysburg Bluegrass Festival! J.D. has been working hard and is ready to pick. We are really looking forward to seeing the folks at Gettysburg and to hear J.D. play the five again. ~The New South
While JD is Recovering…. Well, it’s been a little while since we last posted. J.D. is doing well and going to all of his therapy appointments. They are having him work his left hand on his banjo some, and he is encouraged by his progress. The New South has had two shows since we last posted. Matt DeSpain went out on a short tour with Charlie Sizemore, so Matt Ledbetter and Jimmy Mills both filled in with us in Wilmington, OH and did a great job. We had a good crowd and enjoyed picking with both those guys. Last night’s show was at Meadowgreen Music Hall in Clay City, KY. Johnny Lewis picked with us again and again did a fine job on the banjo. Despite the University of Kentucky Wildcats playing in the final four, we still had a pretty good crowd and enjoyed picking for everybody that came out to see the show. If you’ve never been to this venue we are sure you would enjoy the many shows they have throughout the winter months. We have two requests for you to put in your thoughts and prayers. Former band member Phil Ledbetter is going through some cancer treatments and we wish him a speedy recovery. Also, we would like to let the family of Harley Allen know JD and The New South are thinking of them and praying for them in their time of loss. Harley was a great friend and fabulous song writer. He will truly be missed by all. ~The New South
The String Cheese Incident The New South, with the help from Jim Mills, just returned from Denver Colorado after opening for The String Cheese Incident last night. What an experience we had performing to a sold out crowd of 7,000! We had a great time. After performing an hour of JD Crowe and the New South material and listening The String Cheese Incident perform their first set, our highlight was performing three songs on stage with The String Cheese Incident beginning with Jim Mills on the five kicking off How Mountain Girls Can Love. We would really like to thank all the guys in the band and all those behind the scenes for their hospitality as well as the 1st Bank Center and the great crowd we played for. Thanks to Milton, WV We want to thank all the folks who came out to the Mountaineer Opry House last night to see the show! We really appreciate the receptive crowd and all the concern for J.D. Johnny Lewis did a great job picking! While on the way to the show, Dwight got sick and Windy Miller, who picked with JD in the early 1980s, came to fill in. We really appreciate his willingness to come and the crowds kindness with the changes. JD is still doing therapy and getting stronger every day. His pain is a lot less and he is hoping to be picking again soon. We appreciate everyone who signed the big card last night and will get it to JD. Thanks again to all those who have sent cards or signed the guestbook. JD really appreciates his bluegrass fans. ~The New South
The Show Goes On The show in Milton, West Virginia on Saturday, March 5 is going on! We really appreciate the promoters for allowing the New South to come and play and promise we will have a great show for you. Rickey and Dwight have been with JD for almost 14 years now and Matt and Kyle have been on board for over a year. Johnny Lewis from Sandy Hook, Kentucky will be helping us out on this show and the show in Clay City at the Meadowgreen Music Hall. We promise to do our best to entertain and keep Crowe’s music alive and well as his arm continues to heal. JD is still working with his booking agent at Class Act Entertainment to talk with promoters and we will hopefully be able to let you know about other shows soon. JD’s therapy is going well and his pain is getting less each day. We have had a few questions about the statement from some of the blogs that JD went from Youngstown, OH where the injury happened to Louisville to get his arm looked at. We are not sure where this information came from, but it is not accurate. He was transported by ambulance to a hospital in Youngstown. All the EMTs and doctors were great there- he just wanted to come home to have his surgery locally. They performed surgery at St. Joseph Hospital in Lexington, KY and JD is very pleased with his physicians and the care he is receiving. JD Is Home Thanks to God, all the prayers, and great doctors, JD is on the mend! He was released from the hospital today at 4:00 p.m. and was sent straight to a therapist where he was fitted with two slings to begin the healing process. He was given some exercises to work his fretting hand. He has to work his fingers with rubber bands right now, but he is looking forward to when he can begin to work them out on the banjo again. He wants everyone to know that he appreciates all the prayers and kind words. He wants to especially thank the fans and staff at the Joe Val Bluegrass Festival for their understanding and support. He looks forward to making it up there in the future. ~The New South
Surgery Goes Well! JD went in for surgery around 2:30 p.m. today and was finished about 4 hours later. X-Rays have been taken after surgery and everything looks great! We really appreciate everyone’s thoughts and prayers. Update on Monday JD visited his family physician and got referred to a specialist today. After being examined by the specialist is has been determined that he will have surgery on his arm Tuesday, February 22 at 2:00 p.m. in Lexington, KY. The doctor feels like he will heal well. Meanwhile, JD wants everyone to know that he is working with The New South to get a banjo player to fill in for him and hopes that people will still come out to see the shows. Once things are worked out, we will update the website to indicate which shows are still going to be performed. We appreciate everyone’s prayers and continued support as we keep JD in our prayers and hope for a speedy recovery.
No J.D. Crowe Festival in 2011 J.D. wants the fans to know that the JD Crowe Bluegrass Festival that usually takes place in September in Wilmore, KY won't be happening this year, for reasons outside of his control.

IBMA Nominations Announced JD Crowe has once again been nominated for the Banjo Player of the Year award. The IBMA's award show will be held October 2nd, 2008 in Nashville, TN.
SPBGMA Song of the Year Award JD Crowe and The New South won the 2008 SPBGMA Song of the Year award for their latest projects' title cut, "Lefty's Old Guitar." The award was presented in Nashville, TN on February 3rd, 2008.
SPBGMA Award Nominations for JD and Crew JD Crowe has a chance to add three more awards to his collection at the 34th Annual SPBGMA Bluegrass Music Awards on Feb. 3rd in Nashville, TN. Nominations include Banjo Performer of the Year, Album of the Year(Lefty's Old Guitar), and Song of the Year(Lefty's Old Guitar).
2008 Tour Kicks Off With New Band The New South's 2008 Tour got underway Jan. 18th with a concert in Ashland, KY's Paramount Arts Center. The band is featuring two new members this year and fans got their first "listen" to Steve Thomas on fiddle and John Bowman on upright bass. The Tour continued Saturday night in Columbus, OH. and next ventures into Nashville, TN for the SPBGMA events on Feb. 1st. Then down the road to the Station Inn on Feb. 2nd.
Grammy Nomination for Lefty's Old Guitar The nominees for the 50th Annual Grammy Awards were announced on December 6th and JD's latest project, "Lefty's Old Guitar" is nominated for Best Bluegrass Album! Fellow nominees in this catagory are Cherryholmes, Jim Lauderdale, Seldom Scene, and Tony Trischka. The Grammy Awards will be broadcast on CBS at 8PM ET, February 10th, 2008.
IBMA Award for Lefty's Old Guitar JD and Crew picked up the Album of the Year award at the 2007 International Bluegrass Music Awards show on October 4th. "Lefty's Old Guitar" tied for the award with the Infamous Stringdusters' "Fork In The Road" project. The title track was nominated for Song of the Year, JD was nominated for Banjo Player of the Year, and Ron Stewart was nominated for the Fiddle Player of the Year award.
